Photoshop Self Evaluation

Photoshop Self Evaluation

I feel that i have learnt a lot over the last six weeks to do with Photoshop. Before the six weeks i had only used Photoshop once and i didn't get to use it or long so i really knew nothing to do with it, i also had no idea about how complicated posters can get, as they have different sizes compared to the normal A4 and A3. also i didn't realise that there was so much thought in to poster designing.
no though i feel that i have become quite advanced with Photoshop and have a good understanding of posters and the process of making them.

Final Design and Evaluation

Final Design and Evaluation

Over all i am very happy with how my poster turned out , However i will say that some aspects of it could be improved. for example the title could be improved as i could not find the exact font that was used and also i could not fit the whole of it on the poster so i ended up squishing the end.
Also it would of been good if the text at the bottom was customized a bit more and not just taken from the original poster this is based off of.

My Poster Design Process

My Poster Design Process

Here is my final poster for this part of the course:

I first set out to find a Photo that i could base the rest of the poster on so i found one of the martian posters.

I then looked for a photo of Leonardo Dicaprio in the revenant that would fit the poster so i found this.which i thought was good as it was not to complicated and leos face looked intense but a low level which worked as in the original poster matt damons was also serious and intense.

I then selected matt damon form the photo and used the function fill to make it so he was not in the suit, i still needed to blur and patch some of the photo but that was not that hard. i then cut out Leos face from the photo above. i also cut out his hair as i thought if he was in a space suit he would where one of the ski head sleeves that make it look as if his hair is tucked away.
I then blurred the edges of the photo in with the main photo and then changed the hue to make it seem as if the background was a snowy blue rather than a dessert redy orange.
I then removed the text at the end of where it says the martian again using the select tool and fill function, i also used this to remove where it says Matt Damon and Bring Him Home. and replaced them with Leonardo Dicaprio.

I then added "NANT" to the end of the title to make it the mix of the martian and the revenant, then i put the words God Damn Bears where Bring Him Home was. i thought that God Damn Bears was good as it was relevant to the film as leo gets mulled by a bear and it fit the idea of there only being three words.
I then added the mic that matt damon wheres to leo in side his helmet and exported the whole thing to create the final poster.

Different shots used in a scene

Different shots used in a scene

Scenes use lots of different shots to portray the event or story, as they give the viewer a sense of involvement with in the scene, which makes the viewer feel immersed and interested in the film.

Here are some examples of shots and why they are used from a scene in the film Fury:

This shot is a close up, this might be used to emphasize on what a character or object is doing. it might also be used to show the characters emotions.

This is a far shot, this might be used to give context to a situation or too show what is happening.

This is a mid shot, mid shots might be used to show what the character is doing on a singular level rather than showing everything that is happening in a far shot.

This is a extreme close up, this shot can again be used to show emotion or to directly pinpoint something that is happening with in the scene.

How colours work

How colours work

Monochromatic:
Monochromatic is when you use only one colour but all of its tints and tones as well. for example you could use a bright red and a dark reed.

Triad:
Triad is when three colours are directly contrasting one another. for example the primary colours red blue and green are triad.

Complementary:
Complementary is when two colours are directly opposite on the colour wheel and enhance or emphasize each other. for example red and cyan complement each other.

Shades:
Shades are when you take one colour and have a number of darker versions of the same colour.

Analogues:
Analogues are when a colour is comparable to another. for example cyan can be compared to blue.

Compound:
Compound is when you take two colours and make a mixture of the two to make the colour in the middle. for example pink and yellow make purple

Why you should white balance when filming:
you should white balance when filming because it is hard for the censor to pick up the colour accurately, as when all the colours are mixed together it makes white and when there is different levels of each colour it may not look realistic or the colours that you want.

How you would use Adobe Kulur:
you can use Adobe Kulur to figure out what colours work with others for example if you waned a complementing colour you would use it to find out what blue complements to which is orange.

Behind making the photo-motion film

Behind making the photo-motion film

I first came up with some ideas. the first one I came up with was of me floating in mid air then I was told that it had to be about me so I then came up with the idea of my phone magically going through photos of me which in the end I did not do. I then thought that I could make it look like the ear phones untangled them selves and then went through my music on my phone, how ever in the end I adjusted this idea and included me untangling them and me swiping through the music as it was much easier too do on the short time scale I had.

When it came to taking the shots I decided to use my desk as a back drop and had my camera focused just in front of the desk as that was were the ear phones and the phone would be. I set my camera to do multi shots on a timer that gave me time to get in to position and the frame everything. in total I ended up with about 145 photos to animate in to a sequence.

Then I edited the video and made it the right time scale so it did not go too fast. I added some sounds that I got online to give it a kind of cartoony feel and I added music too match the song that was shown on the sequence. I also added some text at the end to finish the video and to say thanks for watching.

over all I am quite pleased with how the video came out and I think next time I will take more shots to make it seem more fluid and at some points the video did feel like the frames did not match.

here is the finished video:

The impact of sound

The impact of sound
Sound had a fairly low impact in early cinema as it was hard to actually recreate the sound so they exaggerated the visual aspect.

However modern cinema is completely the opposite as it uses sound in a lot of different ways from telling a story to make the viewer feel something. story telling can come from just speaking over the images and telli9ng the story to making the scene fell like it was right were the viewer is by recreating the sounds that would of happened in the real world. and you can make some one fell differently about a scene by the use of music as if you had very intense music they might feel that the scene was fast and worrying or if they put classical music to it they might think that it is romantic.

My progress in publishing

My progress in publishing

What was my knowledge of the software and process before I started?
I had very little knowledge in Photoshop as a whole and had nearly no knowledge on the process of making film posters.

What have I learn?
I have learnt a lot since I started from how they choose what text they put in a poster to how they pick the final size of one. I am very happy with how I have progressed in Photoshop considering I had nearly zero knowledge in it.

What will I do differently next time?
next time I will make a poster that didn't just have a few elements that I created in it but it will have nearly all the elements from me creating them.

I asked John why he liked my poster and he said "because it looks as if it was the original and that the film was real".

The effects of colour in design

The effects of colour in design
Colour plays a big part in design as different colours create different emotions to the person looking at the colours. for example if there is a bright blue or yellow that would be seen as happy and could be used for things that children would look at. also there is the other side where if the colour is dark and dingy like a grey or dark blue then it will make the person think that it is sad.

here is a colour wheel I made out of photos:
Sorry that the colour wheel is not complete but it is mostly there:

Primary and Secondary research

Secondary and Primary Research

Primary research is when you carry out the research i.e. make a questionnaire to ask people, or go and look at items yourself.
The positives for primary research is that you know the source and can trust it however if you re not able to get enough evidence then it could be unreliable.

Here is an example of some research i did in to posters:

Here is a survey i did on the God father poster:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/19Eb-D1TzHpuwPYm1VJnN4FWHiZMRopR2vIjALVijSxM/edit#responses

Secondary Research is when you take someone else's research and use it in your project for example, taking stuff from books or online. the positives of secondary research is that you don't have to waste time finding out the results and then you can carry on with the project however some times the research is unreliable and my be made up.

Here are some links that are examples of secondary research on layouts of magazines

object, path, stroke and fill in illustrator

Object, Path, Stroke and Fill in Illustrator

Object:
An object in illustrator is an element that can be manipulated to make what you want for example if you drew a square using the square tool than that square is the object.

Path:
A path is the black line that appears when you draw a line in Adobe Illustrator. A path is made up of a series of points called “anchor points” and line segments between these pointsImage result for what is a path in illustrator

Stroke:
A stroke in illustrator is what we use for drawing as it is the line that is put down when we click and it can be adjusted for example you can adjust the width and colour of said stroke.

Fill:
Fill is a command that can be used to put a area within an object to a certain colour. for example if I had a square and wanted to make it green i could use the fill command to fill that area with green.

over dubbing sound

Over Dubbing Sound
Over Dubbing sound is when you take a clip that is used in a film or video and you make noises and record them to replicate the environment that the clip was filmed in.

I had to come up with a number of sounds for example I had to record cars and traffic from out side as even though the clip was mainly inside you could still hear the cars outside. I also had to create banging and shaking sounds as in the film the characters shakes a vending machine. to do this we found a filing cabinet that when we shook it, it sounded like the vending machine being shaken.

the hardest thing is putting the sounds together and making them the right volume to match what would really of happened.

here is a video on professional over dubbing:

typography

Typography

1. Retro Script is a typeface that is largely used in advertising, as it is very bold towards the centre of the letters and then sharply thins down towards the edges whilst maintaining a strong curvature to the whole thing. it tends to work well with bright colours and brands as it gives of a fun and flirtatious feel.
The Red Socks along with many other baseball teams use Retro Script as when the teams were formed it was the new craze to have this vibrant and exciting font in there brand.
Coors Light is also a brand that has decided to use Retro Script as it brings a fun and exhilarating feel to the brand.

There are many other brands that use this font as there brand for the same reason as the last two. For example:

2. Typeface is the design of the alphabet--the shape of the letters that make up the typestyle. The letters, numbers, and symbols that make up a design of type. So when you say “Arial” or “Goudy” you're talking about a set of letters in a specific style. Font: is the digital file that contains/describes the typeface.

3. serif faces have little squiggles on the ends of the characters and sans-serif does not have the squiggles

poster designing

poster designing

My Poster:
From the posters that i found i got the idea of what i could do for my own poster i was asked to make my poster on Creed and i took different aspects from the real posters i found for example i liked the idea of a big title at the top and the names of the main actors.
Fonts-akzidenz- grotesk pro
Colour-black grey white red and blue
Poster size-quad
Style-simplistic silhouette
Economics
Target audience-teenage and adult males
Artistic or commercial-70% artistic 30% commercial
Constituent elements-american flag background, silhouette, title, actors names

For my next design i will make a more graphically orientated poster. I will also add production information like the name of the director, and the logos of the companies that made the film.

Uses of elements/tools in photoshop

Uses of elements/tools in photoshop
Crop Tool - the crop tool can be used to make a photo smaller and cut edges of the photo out.

Blur Tool - the blur tool is used to blend elements of a photo together or hide something that you don't want. For  example if you cut someone out of a photo and say there hair was still there you could blur it in and you would not see it.
Paint Tool - the paint tool is used to add drawings to the photo to add new elements. For example if i wanted to add a funny cartoon character to look like it is interacting with the photo then i could draw it straight onto the photo and join up the layers.

How Photoshop can effectively used for image manipulation?

How Photoshop can effectively used for image manipulation?
Adjust photos and make them better or fix them. For example if you had a photo that the colour was off or you wanted to make it black and white then you would adjust the saturation.
Can change photos and join them up. For example if i had two images that needed to be one then i could join the two layers by right clicking the layers and pressing join.
Correct things such as exposure or white balance. For example if you had an overexposed photo that was very white you could adjust the exposure and the white balance to make it seem a more natural colour.
Manipulate pixels - remove unwanted elements of a photo. For example if a kid photobombed  shot you could remove it and make it seem like they weren't there.

Visualising Data

Visualising Data

I was asked to make a pie chart on some data about the college that was collected to get students opinion of what rules are appropriate and what are not and also how the students felt about those rules.

I was given the data for the question "Do you think you should be allowed to have a mobile phone with you in class?". The results did not surprise me at all.
7% said that we should be allowed to have and use mobile phones in class, the other 93% said that we should be allowed to have them on us but not allowed to use them, no one said that we shouldn't be allowed to have them at all or that the teacher should keep them.

Here is a poster that I made in Illustrator to show this data.
