Presentation Video

Presentation Video
Here is a video of my presentation I did for my FMP, I was rather nervous when doing it, and a little tired from the weekend, but I do feel that I pulled it off, and gave a good talk. I will be honest and admit I could of been a little louder and clearer, but as I said I was nervous, and it was my first presentation.
When it came to answering questions, the main point that came up was that there's a lot to do , but I explained that I have a detailed plan of what I am going to do, lesson by lesson, and week by week.
The other main point was, that I might not have enough time to execute the animation well, but I did go in to detail explaining that the way I am going to animate by work is a 'non time consuming' easy process that each scene angle can take about two minuets on the background and maybe half an hour of the characters.

Experimentation and Research

Experimentation and Research
After completing my experimentation I have made a questionnaire which will tell me what hair style/colour I should use, what colour background and what eyes, also if there should be any other options to the choices I have given.

After leaving the questionnaire for a few days and asking a few people specifically to get a wider range of ages and personalities including a couple of people from France and my friend from Japan to make it a very genuine and wide audience. I got a total of 19 responses which feels like a good amount. However, may be another 10 more or so would be good, but its hard to get people to give responses through Facebook and other social media.
The results came close to matching my opinions that I mentioned in my experimentation blog's, But, most of the results went with what  had in second place for example, I wanted to use A for the eyes but the most popular in the questionnaire was B which was my back up so I will be following the responses and research by using B.
The responses also concluded that for the colour of the hair it was a fairly odd graph with A and B tying in first place so I am going to go with my gut feeling of what is better and I am going to use A for the colour of the hair.

Then for the hair style it became a tie between D and A, So again now its down to my opinion and as I stated in the experimentation blog, I am going to go with D as it maybe harder to draw but it is the easiest to make it look right unlike A which I struggle to make look good.

Then there are the different colour backgrounds, that give different feels to the scenes. Sunset was the over all winner of this question with the original background coming a close second. The green spirit colour didn't even make it on the chart so, that is out of the question and not going to be used at all.

In the experimentation blog about colour I said that I may use all of the different coloured backgrounds for different scenes, which I am going to do now to give the film a bit more variation in colour, plus, add a little colour grading and it could look quite good. I am not going to use the green (Spirit) background however, as it didn't even make the chart.

Finally the last question was would you add any more options to any of the questions? it a rather general or wide question so i didn't get direct answers for it but i did get a couple of decent suggestions by a couple of people, but a lot of people left it blank or said no which was ok as it was not a required question.

The suggestion to make the character most generic and unbiased to race is a very valid and good suggestion, but I feel that it would be hard to pull off as I am only going to have one character to draw and most of the people in my Taekwondo class are Caucasian/White British, including my friend. I could add more characters, but then that would require more time to make them look good an to draw/animate the scenes.
Then, there's the suggestion to maybe have a different style of nose. Now I have been thinking on this for a little while, and I cant come up with and better styles that fit the rest of the design, However, I will make the nose smaller on the final piece as that would make it stand out less and look better on the whole. similar to most animations.

Project Management Techniques

Project Management Techniques
For my project I wanted to plan week by week and lesson by lesson what I was going to do so I started off by writing out in my sketch book dates of each lesson, and then writing what I was going to do in the said lesson, I would then tick it off , when that task is done. for example:
16th march
figure out what types of research
assignment 2 (2) blog about research

I have done this for each step of my FMP allocating the amount of time I will need for each task as some require more time than others, like writing/drawing my story board. I have allocated two days to do so, and a week end at home. As I know that to get it right and looking professional, not rushed is important. As my script and whole project will be based around it so it needs to be done with enough time to get it right.

I then wrote up my plan in a spreadsheet using google sheets so that it looked neater and more organised, so that other people could read it. I also used green red and orange to tell me if it has been done to deadline and weather it is done at all. Now the tasks don't have to be finished to be green as I may go back to them and improve somethings a little later as I have allocated a week were it is to finish off things if I am behind or to improve upon them.
Here is a screen shot of the sheet:

Colour Experimentation

Colour Experimentation
I looked at different colours that I could use for my animation and I have decided that I want to use  a very calm, kind of beige or yellow colours mixed with brown and black for my main background. However , I  have looked at different colours to make different effects or emotions appear.
Here is the original:

Here Are the other colours:

The blue background makes it seem as though it is night which I could use for a couple of the scenes maybe the more serious ones. This is almost a direct opposite of what the original makes you feel, as the original seems as if it is day time.
The red makes the feel that it is sunset or even a blood moon. I feel like a can't really use this one in much maybe just to give the scenes a bit of personality, but not for certain types of moves, although I could say use the original for blocks, the blue for stances and the red for kicks to show what we are focusing on during the animation. Finally, there is the green, which I do feel would not be of any use other than the indication of different types of moves, but if I was doing some sort of fantasy or horror film, then this would be good as, it makes the scene seem as though there is some sort of evil spirit possessing all that is around.

I then had a look at the characters colours I am going to make them a white male (more of a pink) that will wear the white traditional Taekwondo Dobok . I haven't decide what belt colour he will be most likely red, black or white. I experimented with what colour hair he should have and , I came up with four colours to choose from.
Red, Blond, Brown and Black.
Here are the colours:
I feel that either the blond, red or black would be best as the blond is a little too flashy for what i am going for. but deciding on which I don't know so I will do a poll on which too use via  a questionnaire on Facebook.

Animation Experimentation

Animation Experimentation
I wanted to look at different types of animation techniques, But, I found a way of animating that I think will be the best to use. Basically, I start off with importing the background that I want in to animate I then draw or import the other layers that I want in the animation weather it be a character or a foreground or mid ground piece I then set a key frame further down the time line and adjust each of the layers to what I want them to end up as then I create a classic tween between the key frames I did try a motion tween and a frame by frame animation, but, they didn't work or look right. The finished product makes the scene look as if it is moving and alive, when, in actual fact it is just still images this technique is used a lot in animate.

I then experimented with different speeds and angles of this technique and I think that each serves a different situation so I will probably use lots of different ones for different scenes.

I then looked at how I wanted to animate the character, I first looked at using bones to animate them, which I think will work rather well, the only thing is that when the arms cross over each other they go invisible loosing the immersion. So, I am going to do a little more research to see if there is a way of getting rid of it, and then I will use the bones. However, I will at the moment be animating them frame by frame, which will take longer but , will guarantee a good outcome.

Drawing Experimentation

Drawing Experimentation
For my first set of experiments I decided to look at how i want the drawing of the animation to be. I made a few comparisons on different aspects of the scenes and I will be asking some other people of what they think.

The first experiment I did was on what eyes I wanted to use for the characters, now taking in to account of which would save time whilst still looking the best i have my own opinion on which I should use, however like I said I will be asking some other people of what they think.
I personally think that A and B are the best looking and most practical because they are simple and easy to draw however A doesn't have much detail but does give the character a very serious stern look that is made better with hair. Also I think that B could be seen as though the character is sleeping which I also don't want. I have written off C and E completely as C makes it seem as though the character is dead and E just doesn't look natural in my opinion. D on the other hand could be used but it gives a very surprised expression which again is not what I am going for.

Moving on to the next experiment I looked at different hair styles, similar to the eyes I have my own opinion of what I should use but I will be asking some other people of what they think is best.
I personally think that D or E are the best options as they look the best however D takes the longest to draw as it is lots of long individual lines, but E is fairly quick to draw compared to say A and D. I have decided to cast off A and B completely because I am not happy with how they turn out and i cant get them to look how i imagine in my head so there a no. C on the other hand I am willing to use if the majority other people i will ask say to use it as it is basically E but a little more round.

The final Drawing experiment I carried out was how I wanted the main background to look. Now I knew that i want a sort of dojo but I didn't know how I was going to draw it, the plus side is with each animation I can just copy and paste the background for each frame instead of drawing it each time, I will need a couple of different agles of the same background though so I might have to draw 3-4 backgrounds in total to get all the angles I need.
Here is my first attempt of making the dojo which as you can see I didn't finish because as I was making it I found that it was hard to draw as it uses shapes rather than the pen tool also it just didn't look that good. So i decided to scrap that idea and restarted by drawing based on a photo that i got off of google, i first imported the photo in to photoshop and then drew other it to get something that was like the photo but with  more drawn comic style using layers of the ben and picking colours off of the original image.
This is what i ended up with and i am quite happy with it however speaking to some other people and looking at it my self it needs some more detail in the form of outlines around each of the colours to give more of a three dimensional feel.

That is all the drawing experimentation I did other than drawing a couple of stick men to see if they would work instead of drawing a detailed character but they didn't so i gave up on that idea. other all though i now feel I have a good idea of how the character and scenes will look.

Assignment 1 Vlog

Assignment 1 Vlog

As i said in the vlog i found assignment 1 fairly easy as i all ready had a vague idea of what i wanted to do my project on so when it came to coming up ideas i based it around the fact i wanted to do the project on Tae-kwon Do. However my tutor said that if i experimented with a few more ideas using a mind map i might change my mind. which i did to a point as i still based my film on Tae-kwon Do but instead of me doing the history of i decided to make it on the theory we have to learn.
Then we had to write out a project proposal and a statement of intent which is basically a formal document locking in my final idea which if i wanted to change it i could just write another one.
Then we had to make and present a presentation on our project to our teacher which i was nervous about how ever i got it done using a website called Prezi which made the presentation a little more colourful. then i was given some feedback about my project and the main criticism was that there is a lot to do but i said that if i follow my plan i can get it done.

FMP Research

FMP Research
For the majority, my research is from one source the 'TAGB Taekwondo student handbook'. I'm using this as my main research source because it is what my whole piece is based around so all of my film/animation will be referencing it.

I have done some primary research in the form of asking questions to my intended audience (other Taekwondo students). I asked them weather what i am making would be beneficial for them? which the majority said that it would. Then asked what parts of the theory would be helpful? I got a lot of answers saying to focus on the main basic moves up to red belt including the big chunk of theory at the start of the TAGB handbook that mentions key dates and expressions. I then asked how long they feel i should spend on each move/theory? they said between 15-20 seconds so roughly adding it up my final piece may be longer than intended but that is no big deal just some extra work. I asked a total 7 people so i got a fairly wide opinion which was mainly positive. One of the more specific questions i asked was is 5 moves for each categories enough or would it be a good idea to do more? about 5 of the answers were that it would be enough as long as their the easier ones to remember as the instructors are not given a book to read out of when asking the question there having to remember them them selves.

I have also carried out some other secondary research in the form of on line sources such as Adobe Forums and Youtube tutorials. I have used these to find out how to make certain effects and techniques that i want to implement in to my final piece such as freeze frames and using After effects.

I have also put some research into looking at different clips/animations and I have figured out how I want to transition between live action and animation. There is an effect that i have seen in other clips were the transition between shots/scenes is a wave of smoke, I have not yet learnt how to do make this effect my self but with a little more research I can easily do so. I have also seen in animes that they use a very simple style of animation that i'm certain would be best for this project as it means it will save time. Their animations simply have a number of layers a background a fore ground maybe a mid ground and then the character, the layers are moved very slowly in different directions to give the effect that the camera is moving and the world is alive even tho it is not. this type of animation is good as you only have to focus on the characters movements which don't need to look as realistic because otherwise it would not match the rest of the scenes animation with it being very subtle and slow.

I finally researched in to similar videos online that are doing the same thing that mine is aiming to do however i have not found one exactly similar as there are no Tae-kwon Do videos that use both physical film and animations however there are some that only use physical film but none with animation, also these films don't over theory but only cover the moves and how to perform them which comparing to what i am proposing is only half of what i am doing and i feel that my video will help people a lot more as most know how to perform the moves but not the theory behind them that we need to know for our gradings.
Here is just one example of what I am talking about:

Project concept

Project concept
My overall idea is to have a film that teaches the basic moves and theory of Taekwondo and use animation to explain the moves. I intend to have a voice over explaining the animations, moves and theory. I intend to ask other Taekwondo students, for my research, what moves and theory I should focus on, wether its more blocks and kicks or more on dates of when Taekwondo was formed and brought to the UK.

I will use this as inspiration for the back ground and look of my animations.

I will use this as inspiration for some styles of drawing or transition animations.

I will use this as inspiration for how I will animate my images.

Youtube Video

At 38 seconds on this video of gold rush is my inspiration of how I will use my animations in my video and then the rest is how I will use the live action film. animations will be there to explain things potentially.

Forum
This could be one option when it comes to showing different moves or explaining things to blend the difference between animation and live action and this inspires me to maybe put text and splashes like in the kung-fu panda example, but in freeze frames, like this with the live action in it.

I intend to take different aspects from all of these that I can put in to my own film which I think will give it quite a professional feel.

Brain storming ideas

Brain storming ideas
I wasn't sure about what I was going to do for my FMP at first, but I did know I wanted to make something to either include animation or moving image. Then I thought why don't I do my FMP with both, as both are equally my strong points.
My next step to figure out what I was going to do, was to think of things that I enjoy, so i thought of doing something to do with music, RC's, water sports, Taekwondo or video games.
Then I had to think how I could put these ideas in to animation or film.
I thought that music and water sports would be better as just films with no animation as that would make them easier, because trying to animate fingers playing the guitar would be difficult and water sports would require lots of fast movement animation. I also thought that Taekwondo and video game could be made into an animation and film as either way they shouldn't be to hard, as video games are animations anyway, and you film people playing them. Taekwondo has slow simple movements that would be easy to animate, and I could film one of my classes.
To make it easier to visualise my ideas I then did a mind map, starting with four categories (Documentary film, animation, animation/film mix, instructional film).

Within the first four categories I then, put the different topics I could do each option on and then elaborated on asking question of what I could do for each. For animation I looked at doing either an explaining animation i.e. to explain what something is or how it works or a historical animation i.e. to do a time line of the history of a topic.
Then, for an instructional film I thought of doing either, Teakwondo (explaining moves) guitar (showing how to play basic chords) or RC's (Radio Controlled models)(how they work and how to use them).
Then, for animation/film mix I thought of doing guitar (same as instructional film) video games (the history of and how they have evolved) or Taekwondo (explaining basic moves and theory).
Finally, for documentary film i thought of doing Taekwondo (again the history of) or video games (which again how they have evolved and the history of).
I would like to do one of the animation/film mixes as then it includes both my strong points and requires some good editing to make it look right. I also feel that it would be beneficial for me to do it on Taekwondo as a basic moves and theory film, as it will help me learn the theory for my grading, and that I already have a fairly good knowledge on the topic, so it would be killing to birds with one stone. I can also give it to my instructor when its finished to help other students.
I'm thinking of not doing the other ideas as a whole piece purely film would be hard to manage and organise as at least half film and half animation it mainly requires just me dong the work. However if I just did an animation it would take a long time to make it.

Brand drawing

Brand drawing
Today we were asked to think about what our self brand is and brain storm some ideas about our passions and personality traits. then pick six words that represent us, i chose: dedicated, gamer, Taekwondo, ambitious, adventurous and subtle.
Then we were tasked with making logos based on these words. the first one was to make it with out lifting the pencil off the page, then the next was to use Helvetica and the final one was to only be a picture/image with no text these are what i came up with.
